Capaldi Lab - How to Join
Graduate Students:
Dr. Capaldi is currently seeking new graduate students for one or two positions. Potential graduate students must apply through the formal channels in the Behavioral Neuroscience area of the Department of Psychology.
Requirements:
Potential graduate students must meet the minimum qualifications for admittance in the Department of Psychology Graduate Program. Please be aware of the departmental deadlines for application submission. Outside of the basic departmental requirements, the qualities of successful students include: self-motivated, dependable, goal-oriented individuals who can work well with others as well as independently. Highly desirable are those candidates who have had experience or would enjoy working with both animals and humans in a research setting. ASU Undergraduate Research Volunteer (PGS 399/499)
Pre-Requisites:
PSY 290 - Research Methods
A genuine interest in the area of learning and motivation as it applies to feeding.
Steps To Complete:
1. Make an appointment to see Dr. Gregory Privitera.
2. Once approved, you will need to obtain Animal Certification

*Once on the main page, click on whichever test you would like to complete first out of the two listed above.
*You will be taken to a sign-in page, where you will fill-in all of your personal information, entering "Elizabeth Capaldi" in the space marked "Enter your PI."
3. Also, please fill out the Health Survey .
Vaccinations: you will need to obtain a tetanus shot if you have not had one in the last 10 years and provide proof of an MMR vaccination, which you most likely received as a small child. If you do not have a primary doctor, you can have this done at Student Health for FREE.
4. You will also need to go to the psychology main office to obtain an override slip and have Dr. Privitera sign it.
Note : These steps can be time consuming, so it's best to allow at least a week for testing and paperwork processing through ASU BEFORE you are allowed to work with the animals in the laboratory.
Schedule Requirements:
Minimum enrolled hours : 2
For every one credit hour enrolled, you must work at least:
Spring & Fall Semesters: 3 hours/week
5-Week Summer Sessions: 6 hours/week
Attend & participate in weekly lab meetings.
Research Paper : a 3-page APA style paper for 399 Students or a 10-page APA style paper for 499 students is required by the end of the semester. This paper will document what was learned in the lab, the experiment(s) assigned, any data collected, and prior literature relevant to the topic.
Grades : grades are issued as pass or fail only. To receive a passing grade, you must work all your hours in the lab, participate in lab meetings/discussions, and receive at least a B- on the research paper.
