Research Assistant Information

Are you interested in joining our lab?

It is no secret that having strong research experience as an undergraduate is one of the best ways to impress a graduate or medical school program on your application. Of course, the only way to gain this experience is to volunteer your time to a laboratory that is conducting research that sparks your interest. In the Neisewander lab, we seek motivated, science-oriented undergraduates as a research assistants. The responsibilities that come along with being a research assistant serve to strengthen a student's research skills and help him or her to gain an appreciation for that what a career in science would be like. Research in our lab is very mentor-driven, and students are typically assigned to a project that is headed by a graduate student.

Research assistants in our lab have the opportunity to gain experience handling and injecting animals, learning basic lab maintenance, running animals in self-administration and conditioned place preference experiments, performing catheter surgeries, extracting and processing brain tissue, learning histology and immunocytochemistry techniques, analyzing brain tissue under the microscope, and leading discussion on research papers during lab meetings.

Requirements:

Our main requirement is that a student is willing to be a responsible, reliable member of the lab. In order to really get involved on a project we ask that students be able to dedicate at least 10-12 hours a week towards lab work. Having some degree of flexibility is also helpful as students may be asked to help on projects that start at different times throughout the semester. If in the lab for PGS 399 or 499 credit then the student is required to be in lab for a minimum of 3 hours per credit hour registered for. We also welcome volunteers who do not wish to receive course credit, but we still ask that they be able to dedicate 10-12 hours per week if they want to be on a project. In addition, we ask that all students interested in joining our lab be in good academic standing.

If interested in joining the lab please email either the Principle Investigator, Janet Neisewander (janet.neisewander@asu.edu) or a graduate student, Kenny Thiel (wsu8181@yahoo.com).
