Expectations and opportunities

Junior research assistants (< 1 semester in lab) are expected to handle animals, conduct experiments (typically using automated equipment), collect data, conduct preliminary analyses, and attend weekly lab meetings. In addition to these responsibilities, senior research assistants (> 1 semester in lab) are encouraged, but not required, to run their own projects. All students will have the opportunity to learn theory, equipment programming, and data analysis techniques at a level commensurate to their interests. Senior research assistants are encouraged to serve as co-authors in scientific publications.

 

Requirements

• Interest in animal behavior
• Reliability
• Conscientiousness
• Minimal time commitment of 9 hrs/week (3 credits)
• Have a year (at minimum) before graduating

 

Steps To Complete

1. Make an appointment to see Prof. Federico Sanabria
2. Once approved, you will need to obtain Animal Certification . Complete the following tests:
2a. Test - Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
2b. Test -The Humane Care and Use of the Laboratory Rat
2c. Test - The Humane Care and Use of Birds in Research
3. Once on the main page, click on whichever test you would like to complete first out of the three listed above. To sign in, your username is "asu" and your password "animals".
4. You will be taken to a sign-in page, where you will fill-in all of your personal information, entering "Federico Sanabria" in the space marked "Enter your PI".
5. Also, please fill out the Health Surveillance Questionnaire. You will need to obtain a tetanus and MMR vaccination, if you have not had one in the last 10 years. If you do not have a primary doctor, you can have this done at Student Health Services.
6. PGS 399/499 Students: you will also need to go to the psychology main office to obtain an override slip and have Prof. Sanabria sign it.
 
These steps are time consuming, it's best to allow at least a week for testing and paperwork processing through ASU BEFORE you are allowed to work with the animals in the laboratory.
