Help! I am unable to register for a Psychology course!! Please review the possible issues and answers.  If you need additional assistance with your situation, call 480.965.7258 or email psych.advisor@asu.edu

The course I want to register for has a GreenTriangle (Reserved): A course with a green triangle means that the remaining seats are reserved for a specific population.  To view the review group criteria, please click on the TITLE of the course.  A detail page will open with information on the course description, campus offering the course and farther down the page will be a grid that will describe the reserve group.

Generally, reserved seats cannot be given to students who do not meet the reserved seat criteria.  Approximately 7-10 days before the start of the session any available reserved seats will be made available to the general student population. Any ASU student who has completed the prerequisites can register for the course after this occurs.

NOTE: SBS indicates that the course is reserved for students enrolled in majors within the New College's Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the ASU West campus.  Tempe campus Psychology majors do not meet the reserved seat criteria.

The course I want to register for has a Red X (Closed): Keep Trying!  Drop/add continues through SUNDAY January 23rd. Until that day, availability of classes changes constantly.  Monitor the online registration system for open seats or new sections. See below concerning overrides and have an alternative in mind.  Be flexible – choose another class, in case you can’t get the class you want. Also, the class you need may be offered at a community college.

Overrides for Psychology Courses offered by ASU Tempe campus:

  • Section full overrides:The professor of the course in the Psychology Department is the only one who can authorize a Section Full Override (special permission to register for a class that is already full). Contact the instructor, and if they are willing to give you an override, either forward the approval email to psych.advisor@asu.edu or submit the signed Override Authorization form to the Psychology Advising Office (PSY 255).

  • Non-completed Prerequisite Overrides:The professor of the course in the Psychology Department is the only one who can authorize a prerequisite override (special permission to register for a class that you have not completed the required prerequisites).  Contact the instructor, and if they are willing to give you an override, either forward the approval email to psych.advisor@asu.edu or submit the signed Override Authorization form to the Psychology Advising Office (PSY 255).

  • If you have completed the course prerequisites and you meet the reserve seat criteria (if applicable) but are unable to register, email psych.advisor@asu.edu or call 480.965.7258 for assistance.

  • If you are currently completing or have completed a pre-requisite for a Psychology course at a community college and need an override, please copy and paste a print screen of your unofficial transcript showing your grade or course end date and email to psych.advisor@asu.edu or fax to 480.965.8544.  If you are currently enrolled in the course, the course must be scheduled to end before the beginning of the next semester. As soon as your grade posts for the course, contact the community college and request that an official transcript be sent to ASU to transfer the credits. Watch your DARS – it may take 7-10 business days for the course to be loaded into your DARS.

Overrides for Psychology Courses offered by ASU West or ASU Polytechnic campus:

 Academic Success Issues and Concerns

Issue: My cumulative GPA is below a 2.0 and I need to have Liberal Arts Advising hold removed.
Answer:
You are in danger of academic probation if you have an advising hold and your GPA is below 2.0.  Students whose GPA places them below good standing as defined by Arizona State University or thier particular college are placed on academic probation.  You must make an appointment to meet with an academic advisor to learn how to avoid being on probation and before your advising hold will be removed.  You must complete the Pre-probation Homework prior to this appointment. For additional information, please call 480.965.7258 or email psych.advisor@asu.edu.  Be sure to include your name, ASU Affilfiate ID# and phone number.

Issue: I am Off Track one term and need to have the eAdvisor hold removed.
Answer: Log into your myASU, review your major map and run a critical requirement audit from the My Progress Reports (DARS) link. Then schedule an appointment to meet with an academic advisor. For additional information, please call 480.965.7258 or email psych.advisor@asu.edu.  Be sure to include your name, ASU Affilfiate ID# and phone number.

Issue: I am Off Track two terms and must change my major.
Answer: You do not need to meet with a Psychology department advisor. Review the information on How to Change your Major and then contact an academic advisor in the department or school of your new major. For assistance on choosing a major, please see the following resources or come in to meet with a Psychology advisor.

Issue: I need to withdraw from a course - what should I do?
Answer: Before withdrawing from a course, please review the following information and then schedule an appointment to meet with an advisor to discuss your situation and options.

After the drop/add deadline through the 10th week of a fall and spring semesters, students can withdraw from any class and receive a grade of "W." Classes with alternate beginning or ending dates (such as summer session classes) may have an adjusted withdrawal deadline. Students can request a course withdrawal online by signing into My ASU or in person at any registration location.

Classes from which students withdraw will remain on their transcript with a grade of "W." Please consult the Tuition Refund Policy to determine whether withdrawing will or will not generate a tuition refund.

Students should be aware that nonattendance will not automatically result in being dropped/withdrawn. Instructors have the right to exercise this option at their discretion. Students unable to complete a class must officially drop or withdraw themselves from the class prior to the appropriate deadline. Failure to withdraw from a class may result in a final grade of "E" being assigned for that class.

Students should also be aware that dropping below fulltime enrollment (12 credit hours) may have serious consequences e.g. critical tracking status, financial aid/scholarships, housing, insurance.

Issue: I need to withdraw from all of my classes - what should I do?
Answer: Students can request a complete withdrawal from the university until the semester transaction deadline, please consult the Academic Calendar  for appropriate deadline dates. Complete withdrawals should be viewed as a last resort as there may be serious academic and financial consequences in processing a complete withdrawal. Because making a complete withdrawal from the university is a difficult decision, the university has many resources in place to help.  Beginning the first day of classes (for the fall and spring semesters), undergraduate students are required to work with a Student Retention Coordinator to facilitate the withdrawal process or explore other potential options.  For more information on complete withdrawals, contact the University Registrar’s Office at studentretention@asu.edu.

 Experiential Learning Opportunities

Issue: I am looking for a lab to complete a PGS 399 or PSY 499.

Once you have been approved for a lab, submit the Application for Undergraduate Research Assistantship to the Psychology Advising Office (PSY 255).  An override will be placed so that you can register for the course.

Issue: I am interested in the PGS 484 Internship course.
Answer: The Department of Psychology is committed to providing a limited number of students each semester with an opportunity to complete an Internship for course credit.  The internship provides students with skills and experiences that will enhance their educational and career prospects. For more information concerning this opportunity, please click here.

Issue: I am interested in a PGS 394 Undergraduate Teaching Assistant opportunity.
