Whatever Next? Predictive Brains and the Future of Cognitive Science*

October 18, 2019, 10am-5pm

(Psychology Library, ASU Tempe Campus)

Across areas of cognitive science, new models propose that a basic function of cognition is prediction. We predict when taking a step, when speaking (or hearing) a sentence, when interacting with others; and the brain itself may operate as predictive system.

The symposium consists of talks by three internationally recognized scientists and a panel discussion: (Abstracts)

  • 10 am: Andre Bastos (MIT) Theoretical and Neurophysiological Underpinnings for Predictive Coding
  • 11:15 am: James Enns (University of British Columbia) Is human perception based on predictive intelligence or ?
  • 2 pm: Martin Pickering (University of Edinburgh) Prediction in Language
  • 3:30-5 pm: Panel Discussion
