Transfer Credit Evaluation

The transfer credit process may take several weeks to complete once the student has completed their admission application.

It is the student’s responsibility to verify that all college transcripts are sent to ASU admissions.  Students should contact the registrar at the institutions they attended and request that their official, final transcripts showing all final grades are sent to ASU Admissions.

Only grades of C or higher are accepted in transfer.

Once the student’s admissions file is complete, the Admissions office will review all transcripts and identify all college-level credits to be presented for transfer. Prospective transfer students who want to identify courses to complete prior to applying for ASU admission are encouraged to make a profile for the MyPath2ASU tool.

The Academic Transfer Credit Solutions office evaluates all courses presented for transfer.  Possible evaluation outcomes include:

DIRECT EQUIVALENCY: Transfer course is evaluated to have a direct ASU equivalency.

Example:  Gateway CC MAT 187 has been evaluated as MAT 170 credit at ASU.

MAT 170

Gateway CC: MAT 187 PRECALCULUS

Transfer courses that have direct equivalencies may apply to general education, college requirements, major and major related requirements just as the ASU equivalent course is applied.

DEPARTMENTAL ELECTIVE (DEC):  Transfer course is evaluated as departmental elective (DEC) credit.  This means ASU does not have a course that has the same content but the course can still apply to the degree as credit affiliated with an academic department.

Example:  Gateway CC BIO 160 is evaluated as BIO DEC.

FA16

BIO DEC

Gateway CC: BIO 160 INTRO TO HUMN ANAT R PHY

Departmental elective credit may apply to general education, college requirements, major and major-related requirements if the course content has been evaluated as similar in content to the ASU courses that fulfill these requirements.

GENERAL ELECTIVE: Transfer course is not similar in content to ASU courses but has been evaluated as college credit.   Electives do not fulfill specific requirements.   Electives only help students meet the minimum 120 hours needed to graduate.

Once all courses presented for transfer have been evaluated, the student’s transfer credits are loaded to the degree audit (DARS) tool.  Students may access their DARS through their MyASU page in the My Programs box.  Select the degree progress link and graduation audit (DARS) link.

  • A maximum of 64 semester credits from two-year schools may apply to degree hours.  All courses presented are reviewed to meet requirements but only 64 hours are awarded.  This means that students who reach the 64 hours maximum from two-year schools must complete at a minimum 56 ASU credits to earn an ASU degree.
  • A maximum of 90 credits in transfer may apply to the ASU degree.  This means that all students must complete a minimum of 30 ASU credits to earn an ASU degree.

NOTE:  After the initial credit evaluation has been completed, advisors may identify courses that need additional review for proper evaluation. Advisors may ask students to upload the syllabi for courses to the Transfer Credit Guide (TCG) to aid the evaluation process.
